stevens 44 1/2 or 44

I just picked up what I think is a 44 1/2 has patent date of '94...question is, most I've seen have metal cresent butt, this has an AWESOME what I believe to be a carved horn butt plate...I'm sure pics would help but any ideas?? its a savage plate...

    What do you mean by "savage plate" is it so-marked? According to Flayderman's Guide, the 44-1/2 was made through 1916 and Stevens bought by Savage 1920.

    Stevens made many types of BUTT PLATES there is a SWISS Horn STYLE these have a wrap around effect to let your arm keep the stock from slipping up or down Most are used on heavy barreled OFF-HAND rifles Stevens had @ action types the model 44 was MUCH weaker then the Model 44&1/2 Stevens had fancy levers double set triggers and fancy butt plates. They called these model 45 ,46,47 ETC but they all had either a 44 action or 44&1/2 action. See if you can get a copy of Flatermans guide of Antiques.

    The 44 1/2 has a bar on each side of the breachblock that drop out of the bottom of the action when you lower the lever and open the action. Several options on the butplates depending on model and how they were optioned.

    meant to say its a stevens plate, savage just got typed somehow...brainfart!,,,,,sounds like its a 44 1/2, thanks a bunch!...I'm pretty happy because I bought it thinking it was a favorite!

    Hmmmm, now I'm not so sure as the 45,46, 47, etc seem to all use the 44 1/2 action?..this might turn out better than I hoped!..I'll look for that book, thanks!...in the mean time, i'll try to post pics tonight or tomorrow...thanks again!
