Mod.70 super grade
looking at a real nice M70 in 30-06 24" barrel,Super Grade, well made rap around checkering on piston grip and forearm. Seller tells me it is pre-WWII. the ser. # is 114xxx. Can yhou help me with this rifle. Any info on ser# available, what to look for, etc.

A couple references I checked showed that Winchester stopped production of the Model 70 during WW II somewhere under SN 60,000. I'd be a little leery of your seller.

If your rifle has 6 digits and begins with 114, it was produced in 1949 according to Roger Rule's book. There were less than 2,000 made during WW2 , but full production resumed in 1946 around serial number 51000. there are other mechanical criteria such as safety and action in Pre war description. Some transition models had characteristics of both.0 -
Beware! There is a cottage industry producing pre 64 model 70 Super Grades, Africans, Alaskans and rare calibers like 300 Savage, 35 Remington and 7X57. According to quick look at my reference material, the serial number is wrong to be a pre war gun.
The party selling the gun may or maynot know it's not right. I had an old friend of my dad's call me a few years ago selling some model 70's he had aquired after he sold his business in the early 90s. He had 2 of the best fakes I've ever seen, he of course had no idea. He had invested in something he had always admired and wanted.
Buyer beware, know what your looking at, or take a knowledgable person with you.

It's not prewar, but people dont usually fake a 30.06. I am not that suspiciuos. That being said, its a joke in the collectors world that the sg m70 in 30.06 is the rarest of the super grades because most were used as a platform to fake rare calibers. [:D]

I've never seen a prewar African, fake or otherwise, outside of the Cody museum. I have seen several post war fakes. The gentlman I spoke about above had a 300 Win Mag that was a work of art. There where 2 of them floating around here on the upper west coast a few years ago.
Your correct about sg 06s being hard to find, many have been reborn.[;)]

Yea it comes up over the top, very hard to do correctly.
