S&W 36-1 With adjustable target sights

Found a NIB 36-1 in box at a local gun show. BUT it doesn't match anything in my books.

It has a 4 inch barrel and adjustable sights ???

Everything matches between the box ad gun. Dealer said he had never seen one like that before. Am kicking myself for not buying it as the price was very reasonable/good.

Can you provide some insight into this pistol.

    Smith did make a gun called the Chiefs Special Target that had adjustable sights. I think it was the model 50, however I dont think they made them with 4" barrels. Dont have my Smith book with me.

    Is that gun a 5 or 6 shot? Have you seen the model number stamped on the frame? It sounds like your describing the model 15 AKA Combat Masterpiece.

    I had a friend that owned that exact configuration . He bought his late 1960's. He bought it NEW. Great Gun .only one I had ever seen

    Yes, the adjustable sights were produced both as the M50 & the M36-1 in limited quantities. I've see the M36-1 with a 2" barrel, but wouldn't be surprised to see in with a 3" barrel.

    I would have jumped on a NIB 36-1 at any price up to $750.

    I've been kicking my butt for ever getting rid of the model 36 3" with adj. sights I had.
    It was marked 36 not 50. I have never seen one with a 4" barrel.

    It don't sound right, i.e "the price was very reasonable/good" and "4 inch barrel".

    S & W did make a run of them way back when, ( 2" & 3" barrels). They are high buck collectors items now.

    This one with a 4" at a reasonable price is allful questionable to my way of thinking. Sounds like something that was fabricated in bubba's basement.


    EDIT #1, Can't believe that any Gunshow dealer is going to sell a ORIGINAL M 36 with target sights for 4XX. When a deal sounds to good to be true, it usually is.

    S&W box label will show bbl length. There's a watermark in the center of authentic S&W box labels. Best

    SCS&W shows the Chiefs Special Target produced and marked as 36-1 and 50. It should have a heavy 3" barrel. Would be worth lettering.

    I'd go for it.
    Go back and get it. Post it if you don't like it.
    I regret not picking up a 2" when they came out.
    Was it round or square butt?

    S&W use to make a similar M60 w/ a 3" barrel, full underlug, and target sights & hammer. My old girlfriend wanted something small, but accurate and we picked it up for her in the early 1990s.

    Took it down to the range and it was sweet shooting right out of the box. The trigger was really smooth and easy for her to shoot. I tried it out and the gun was very accurate and I should have gotten one for myself at the time.

    Last time I saw one on GB, the seller wanted $750 for a NIB. I think the designation by S&W was M60-5.

    It was stamped 36-1 in the crane recess on the frame. It was a 5 shot. The end label had all the correct markings on the tag and it did match the pistol.

    I've contacted the gunshow owner and he is contacting the dealer. If the dealer still has the gun, the gunshow owner will give me his phone number if it is okay with the dealer.

    YES, I'm kicking myself in the butt !!!!!! Even my wife asked how come I didn't get it. Price was $4xx. I had a shogun shoot out of state on Sunday, so had to leave early, so I missed out. Hope it is still available.

    I am planning on a road trip to get it if it is still available.
