    "Here is a segment of a twist rate table I keep for reference. This does NOT preclude checking the twist for yourself, it's merely a reference:

    Looking at the twist rates, especially those less than 1 in 9", was the reason for such a "fast" rate because the standard bullets originally for the 7x57 were heavier, like 175 grains?

    Manoa-Fisherman,

    Faster twist rates are used to stabilize the LONGER bullets, no matter what they weigh. In general heavier bullets are longer but in many cases they are not as long as the bullets with better BCs. If you look at the original Greenfield formula you'll see that they calculate the length not the weight of the bullet to establish the BC. The older 175 gr. bullets were long and didn't have the velocity that we achieve these days so it was necessary to make the twist faster for stability.

    To summarize my part of the original post: I've negotiated a deal with the seller allowing me to load some rounds and test fire the rifle. If it shoots 1 MOA or better, I'll buy it, essentially paying $40 more than I outherwise would be willing to pay. If it doesn't shoot MOA or less, I'll reurn the rifle and give him the load data and targets from my loads. I plan on testing 140g, 150g, and 160g bullets (each size from Sierra and one size from Nosler) using bullets I have on hand and load data from the respective manuals. If one or more loads gets close, I'll tweak once and try again.

    Some interesting information posted... thanks for the help.

    My MK 10 is at it's best with Nosler 140 Ballistic Tips in front of H414 for a MV of 2850+ fps. This load is over the manual but is safe in MY RIFLE. This an absolute death ray on deer w/o being overly destructive on the edibles.

    I have a Rem. 700 Camo Synthetic in 280. In your opinion, what is the optimum bullet or bullets for this rifle given the rate of twist at 9.25"?

    Optimum would be hard for me to tell you since your rifle will be the determining factor as to the bullets it likes to shoot.

    However, considering the twist rate, you can use virtually any bullet up to and including the Berger 180 gr. VLD at a length of 1.420" tip to tail. This leaves you a vast resource to draw from generally but your choice of application will provide the limits.

    I think the .280 Rem. makes a terrific elk cartridge when loaded with any of the quality bullets from the 140 gr. Barnes or Nosler Partitions to the 160 gr. Barnes or Noslers. I've used the 162 gr. Hornady AMAX to harvest both elk and Mule deer also.
