Ithaca 37 Barrel

Anybody out there know what I have? It's an Ithaca 37 barel. 22" long , choke tubes (3) marked Ithaca .690, .710, .720. It's stamped 2 3/4" & 3" 12 ga. Kings Ferry, NY. Was this produced in this length by the factory? Another question. Can it be fitted to a pre 855,000 s.n. frame by a competent gunsmith? Thanks for your help.

    Can anyone tell me the difference in pre/post 855,000 barrels. I could really use some help here.

    Can not be fitted to a pre-855K gun. The pre barrels have an interrupted thread while the posts, though they look like threads, are actually parallel grooves.

    The Ithaca Acquisition Corporation located in Kings Ferry, NY did make a 22" choke-tubed barrel for their 87 (a continuation of the 37).

    Thanks for the info. Can a pre barrel be fitted to another pre receiver, even though it's not the same serial #? Also, what is a ballpark value for the post barrel in exc. condition with 3 chokes and wrench? I've been watching gunbroker but haven't seen one go through. Thanks Again.

    Does it have a ventilated rib and is there any evidence the barrel was cut?

    The 87 was NOT a continuation of the 37. It had significant operational changes, and some parts were not interchangable. It might have looked like a 37, but a 37 it was not.

    The serial number will not matter as long as the SERIES is the same as the previous posts have indicated.

    TSR1965: Can you elaborate on the operational changes of the 87. The "slam-fire" trigger, of course, was gone but that went in 1976 and the choke tubes came in with the 87. Anything else?

    No evidence of being cut. It has a vent rib and everything looks good on the muzzle. No cutting or machining marks, what should be blued is. Looks factory to me. Since the 87 and 37 are not exactly the same, will this, being an 87 barrel, fit a later 37 ? Thanks.

    The following is a quote from the book Ithaca Featherlight Repeaters by Walter Claude Snyder: "I do know that a barrel made in 1996 very nicely fits gun number 878083 that was made in 1964;"

    Since 1996 was the last year of model 87 production I will let you draw your own conclusions.

    And to address a question you asked about a pre 855000 barrel/receiver: I have several of these guns (my "newest" one is a 1956!) and none of the barrels will interchange. The tap that cut the threads in the receiver and the die that cut the threads on the barrel apparently began their cuts at a random location. I do not know the method employed but I imagine they could have cut away the threads at the 3 and 9 o'clock locations in the receiver, screwed in a threaded barrel, marked the 3 and 9 o'clock locations, removed the barrel and cut away the barrel threads in those locations. Then the barrel would have the lug attached and the markings stamped in the proper location. You can see that the odds of a random barrel fitting a random receiver are about that of a lottery ticket!
