I am interested in this piece my question is ,is this a 5 screw,
about what year was it made and is the current price good. BIN price to much.
what would you call the condition[?]
Overall what is your thinking of this.

    That is the auction. Not a 5 screw,,BIN,,hmmm some of those Smiths are getting up there....In the day,,they were a slow seller..now,,different...pics are not good,,maybe 98%

    The buy now price is probably a little high but it is well worth the opening bid price (it will go higher) with the box and papers. If I didn't have four 48s already I'd be bidding on it. Noticed that the same seller also has a very nice 17-3 also in very nice condition and well worth the opening bid price. You asked about the five screw variation; I don't think the 48 was made as a five screw. The early production was four screw and that variation would likely be more collectible as there wouldn't have been many of them. According to the S&W Standard Catalog (Supica and Nahas) the 48 (no dash) was only in 1959 with the 48-1 coming in 1960. The 48-4 started in 1977 and the pinned barrel was dropped in 1982.

    Its a 3 screw, and in very good shape. Dont see a lot of 4" 48s, usually 6 inchers.

    Now i know what to look for.Maybe i can find one in Tulsa next Month.

    Sometimes the old "you snooze you loose" is in effect. I have a 6" 48, would like to get a little brother 4" to keep it company. Good luck next time.
