Remington R-25 Black Rifle Project

I have an R-25, and want to refinish the rifle completely. I really thought I would like the real tree camo, but I have to say I can't stand it. It flakes off, and shows white underneath. I want to strip this and go black.

My question is how to strip? I've been told sandblasting, but I was wondering about an automotive paint strip product. Thanks for any suggestions.

  Sell it and buy a rifle in the color of your choice.

  What I would like to do is have the R-25 in black with the lettering in Remington green. What I'm hoping for is some stripping suggestions for the Camo "wallpaper" it came with.

  If you blast, use the plastic beads, not the hard grit ones, like aluminum oxide, or silica. You should get the finish off with te poly beads. The harder type beads will also eat the hardend finish(anodized finish) of the aluminum reciever, after it chews thru the camo finish.

  Call Remington. They may well give you a break on refinsihing it for you as their camo is coming off. the worst they can say is no.

  No bead blasting or any other media blasting is required to remove the camouflage that Remington uses.
  
  It's a simple matter of applying acetone and the camo will come right off. Be careful when using acetone.
  
  The white 'coating' underneath the camo is more difficult but can be persuaded to go away by using a stiff nylon bristle brush with the acetone. It's a matter of elbow grease and determination.
  
  Then it's a simple matter of proper preparation before using a finish you desire whether painted or Ceracoated. Be aware that paint build-up will affect how the gun fits when re-assembled.

  +1 That goes for Mossberg too...I dropped a nasty dirty 835, camo trigger group in to a can of Acetone for about 10 minutes....Came out white...

  I just did the handguard in under 15 minutes.
  
  I placed it in acetone for no more than 10 minutes. The camo coat came off like a breeze! The white undercoat was a little tougher. Just a little scrubbing, and it came off.

  My plans are to to go with the typical Black Anodized finish. It looks like the is actually on the receiver under the camo and the white undercoat. Just wondering if this will in any way harm or weaken the black anodized finish underneath.

  No. We use acetone to clean all our parts, anodized or not.

  Check to see if the metal is stainless steel or not. If it is it can't be hot blued. It will have to go back to the maker to be blued.

  Thanks again so very much. Much better than selling, shipping, purchasing, and paying shipping again.
  
  The freefloat came off in the white beautifully, and the Lower Receiver came out very well. It is in MUCH better shape without the Remington RealTree Wallpaper. There is still a little cleaning to do, but the finish underneath is flawless.
  
  I have a nice little project I am planning for this, and I plan to post more pics. Here are a few pics to show the stripping progress with Acetone. This may be interesting for anyone who wanted the Remington R-25 engraving on their lower instead of DPMS, but wanted it in good old Black Rifle Black.
