Green Stuff on Leather?
What is the green stuff that forms on old leather. Whats an easy way to clean and should it be treated ? thanks

Yep, verdigris if its around brass fittings. If it's just out and away on the leather I have no idea but saddle soap should take care of it. 0 -
The only way I have found to clean verdigris is to scrape it off. A wood popsickle stick and toothpicks work well. Fine steel wool and a paper or cloth rag for the brass. It's nasty stuff. Caused by the reaction of copper in the brass and chemicals in the leather. 0 -
A baking soda paste on a soft toothbrush work well for removing verdigris from brass. 0 -
I've tanned hides and quite often copper is in the tanning chemicals. For whatever reason, it may be coming to the surface. On a side note, if you're making something out of leather, you may want to check on how it was tanned. Sometimes tanning chemicals react with what may be in contact. 0 -
I left a pristine S&W M-19 2.5" in a leather shoulder holster for waaaaaayy too long, and the chems from the leather took the bluing clean off one side of the barrel. (It wasn't holster wear, I rarely removed it, and the gun was laying on the side that had the bluing stripped). I learned my lesson about nasty holster chems the hard way.
As for removal, the scraping and polishing with a bit of baking soda on a q-tip worked perfectly, then coat the whole thing with the saddle soap. After 20+ years, I have no verdigirs on my leather gear, knife holsters, etc.. (and no bluing on the side of a gun barrel [:(])0
