12 GAUGE 2 1/2 INCH IN A WINCHESTER
A friend of mine mentioned to me that he had a winchester 12 gauge shotgun that required 2 1/2 inch shells. I have not heard of such, any ideas what model that it could be? I know that there were some german guns that were chambered for 2 1/2 inch.

The Winchester slide action Model 1883 had 2 1/2" chamber but a lot were re-barreled by the factory in a re-call. The original barrel only had the number 12 on it. The '83 is very similiar to the '87. 0 -
Let me clear this up for everyone...
Winchester never made a 2-1/2" 12-Ga. Instead, it was 2-5/8". The Model 1887 lever-action, and the Model 1893 slide-action shotguns were both made for a 2-5/8" 12-Ga shell. When the Model 1897 was introduced (to replace the Model 1893), it was chambered for a 2-3/4" shell from the begining. All 12-Ga Winchester shotguns produced after the Model 1897 were chambered for the 2-3/4" shell (or longer).
In regards to the 2-1/2" shell length, that was the length used for the early 20-Ga guns.0 -

Glad you put that last line in that reply...I was going to jump
all over you otherwise. I load 2 1/2 inch 20ga for a friends M-12.0
