22 mag advice
Looking to buy a 22 mag. I want bolt action detachable mag fed. Not tube fed. Should I go with heavy barrel or sporter? This will be a varmint gun. Suggestions welcome on make and model as well.

I've had a Ruger M77 22WRM since they first came out, must be atleast 20 years. Great rifle, very accurate with all the features you mentioned.

Varmint hunting has different forms. Will you shooting from a stationary position, or carrying the gun while hunting? At what range do you expect to be shooting? 0 -
125yds max. Will NOT be stationary. Will be carrying and mostly offhand shooting unless I'm leaning on a truck or tractor. Will really be an all around beater. 0 -
Marlin makes a rifle exactly as you describe and at a fraction of the cost of the ruger that was mentioned I'll bet it will outshoot it too My grandad had one only thing I didnt like about it was the mag release as it was hard to operate but the mag was easy to load Savage makes one too however I have no experience with it. 0 -

The best deal I have found is at Dicks Sporting Goods. They have a Savage model 93 .22wmr with scope mounted and boresighted plus accutrigger for $239. It has an OD stock and a heavy fluted bull barrel. Quite a nice rifle for $239 if you can get past the ugly green stock.

My Savage 93 in 22wmr is very accurate. Has the heavy barrel. Bought it as a FV (plastic stock) have since upgraded it to BTV form.
I'd look at the BTV, BV, and TR models.0 -
With such a light caliber is the heavy barrel going to make enough difference to be worth the extra weight? 0 -
Just picked up a used savage 93 heavy barrel. Walked in the shop and the owner was trading it in on a savage 17 heavy barrel with accu trigger and thumb hole stock. 0 -

What stock did you get?
Only real improvements are the thick bottom metal available from DIP and a few other places.... or if you are a McBendy and have some stock and some tools, make your own. The factory bottom metal will distort and if you torque down the action screws too much you can crush the wood/laminate underneath.0 -
It's a very light weight plastic stock. Definitely want a good hardwood to replace it. No thumb hole or anything. Any suggestions? 0 -

Boyds - check their crazy deals, wait for a special on the BV stock (they call it the hunter or something). Boyds is the OEM for Savage0 -
have different 22 mag...recommend a savage with the accutrigger...have also taken several savage cub single shot and redone them to 22 mag...short..light ...easy to pack in a small pickup, tractor, 4 wheeler, etc...plastic stock for beater....used marlin 22mag auto with a big scope for prairie rats years ago but as a non objective opinion i never got excited about micro groove rifling....like to get one with deep cut rifling...for varmint check out new rock island armory tcm..if it gets out in a rifle....wow 0
