Python barrel application

Mine may be heading back to Colt for a barrel realignment.
Does anyone out there know how these barrels are put on and what secures them in place?

    Basically, new barrel turned up hand tight til the rib is at the 45deg postion before straight up at 12 o'clock. From that point the barrel blocks and action wrench are used to torque the barrel to the 12 o'clock position relative to the frame. There are other steps prior to this point,also.

    So basically it is simply screwed on tight and there it stays?

    I believe a special wrench or fixture is used to avoid warping the frame.

    azpowerwagon...Thank you,are you aware of what the prior steps are?

    What Id like to know is if Colt applied a lock tight type of hardening agent to the threads.

    The problem I have with mine is the sight is at 11:55 o clock.

    My gunsmith carefully tried to bring it to 12 o clock with no luck.

    There is a very tiny piece of fuzz right where the rib vent meets the frame.when I tried to brush it away I saw that it is stuck there leading me to think there may be a small piece of cloth caught between the frame and barrel keeping the barrel from reaching TDC when tightened.
    Though the gunsmith failed to turn it clockwise he may be willing to attempt to loosen the barrel,clear out any interuptive material,and then be able tighten it to TDC.
    But i would rather send it to Colt if the threads have some type of lock tight on them.

    You need to leave your gunsmith's hands off it(I know the smith's in your area, and they are not impressive), unless you wish to totally ruin it. In order to do this properly as stated, you need a proper fitting frame vise, and barrel wrench blocks. The crane and cylinder must be removed. I am just about sure your revolver was nickel plated after it was assembled, not before, meaning, there could be some plating interlocking going on. This is a job for Colt to fix. To answer your original question, I am not sure if they used any adheasive's.

    No thread sealant of any type. An anti-seize type of grease could be applied to the barrel/frame junction to prevent galling. The contact surfaces should meet evenly with no high spots and should be checked before installation.

    tsr1965...thank you for the info.My gunsmith is very capable.
    He also feels as you suggested that it is a job for Colt.

    In this matter I am guilty of ignorance.That is why I use this forum.

    If my end goal was the ruination of the gun I would not take it to a gunsmith but simply take a hack-saw to it.

    The Python, and other Colt DA's, are rifled right-twist so the energy of the bullet engaging the rifling actually tightens the barrel/frame lockup with each shot - at least that is the story the FBI firearms instructor told us in the academy. He said that was why the S&W's were pinned - their left-twist could lead to loosening of the barrel. One of the guys on our PPC team had his Python re-nickled and it came back with the sights canted due to the small amount of metal buildup on the barrel/frame junction. He sent it back and it was corrected. I would agree with the above advice to have Colt do the work.
