1894 barrel markings

Is it possible for a 1894 rifle, 38-55, original gun, in the 900,000 serial number range not to have a nickel steel barrel marking. Thanks

  Yes, and in fact, the majority of them do not have a nickel steel barrel. Same holds true for those in 32-40.

  I thought that only applied to earlier serial numbers. Can smokeless powder ammo be used in these guns? Thanks

  As long as you stick to the factory load specs, yes, smokeless powder is perfectly fine. My preference is IMR 4198.
