Some reloading help please....
Ok, I went to the range yesterday to chronograph some loads and I found something that seemed way off. Years ago I chrono'd my .223 remington load at 2939-2964fps with a 60grn Horn with 24grs of H335. My rifle was a single shot with a 20inch barrel.
I recently bought a Remington 799(mini mauser)in .223 also with a 20 inch barrel. The same load chrono'd in the 2600-2700 range with a 55 grn bullet. Even both of my reloading manuals tell me this is way low for this load. Could the powder be bad or what might be goin on? Other than the rifles and 5gr difference in bullet weight everything is the same. What gives? thanks for your time.

The twist of the barrel or the actual bore size might be the reason for the discrepancy. 0 -
let me sum it up in laymans terms.. p3skyking is right on by the way.
you have two 25 yr old women?? one is a red head..one a blonde?? now.. do you think they would be the SAME?!?!all rifles are different. you can take two of the same maker,same caliber,same load.. one is going to shoot faster--maybe not as accurate than the other or,vice-versa0 -
How cold was yesterday at the range compaired to when you last crono the load? The bearing area could be way different between 2 different bullets even if the same weight. Did you store the powder in good conditions? All rifles are individuals, work up your loads for the new rifle. How are the batteries in the crono? 0 -
One reason, any data is out of the longest barrel they can reasonably use. Makes the manufactors product look better.
That being said, 20" barrel can't be expected to get the 24-26" barrel FPS.
Even with the same barrel, NONE on my loads ever came out to the same velocity as the books predict.0 -
I'm with Charlie, what was the temperature difference?m That has more effect than most people think.

This is a very complex situation. First you are using two different rifles. Rifles are as individual, as people are. It takes some doinng to get two that are exactly the same.
It could also be that by dropping the bullet weight, that you did not create enough compression/resistance to ignite the powder like the 60 grain bullet did.
Did you try those loads in your single shot(the 55 grainer's)? You mention "years ago" for the 60 grain loads in your single shot. Have you tried those 60 grain loads in your 799? Are you using the same lot of powder? Things change, just like making a batch of cookies this week, then another three weeks from now, using a new bag of flour.
Just some food for thought. Try shooting the same loads out of each rifle, and see what the results are. Yes I do realize that you believe the 55 grainer's should have been faster than the 60's, but you can't really tell from shooting from different rifles.

First, H335 is very temp sensitive. Were velocities measured in equal temps?
Second, bullet weight and bullet construction have something to do with how much pressure gets built up behind it to push it out. I always find typically that when I work up a load with a heavier bullet a 'nearly as heavy bullet, but of different construction' isn't going to go out the barrel as fast. An example I have is shooting 100 gr. BTSP's in front of 43.5 gr. of RE-17 out of my .243, and, 95 gr. Berger VLD's. The Bergers lose about 100 fps.
And these were both just last week both in the same temp.
Third, as noted, two different rifles will always be different. Sometimes a lot, sometimes not.0 -
If the gun was used it could have a receded throat.
Lots of inexpensive ammo available for 223.0
