Another Savage 99 ??
Can anyone tell me when my Savage 99E ser # E017672 was made? I looked on the lever boss for a letter to determine age per last persons question but mine is worn and can't read it. Any info is appreciated. Terrill

Still need info on date of manufacture. I don't know if this will help but it still has the safety lever lock don't know when savage when to the tang safety on the model 99. Any help is appreciated. Terrill 0 -
It appears in the serialization chart, that your serial number is faulty. In the early years, the serial number's only went to 566,000, and the year 1950, according to the Blue Book...which could be wrong, as proven before. If you can, take a clear picture of the serial number, and post it.

I do not have the capability to post pictures but the serial # is definitely E017672 and I assume this Savage 99E which is marked on the barrel is of the later type as it has a hardwood stock and forend not walnut. Hope this might help. Terrill 0 -
Is it possible that the "E" is a 6 or an 8? Those both come up as valid serial numbers. 0 -

Okay, The "E" serial number shows invalid. Removing the "E" and using 017672 shows made in 1901 or 1906 depending on whose records show.
Making it a "6" or "8" shows from 1953-1960.
Are there any other serial numbers on the rifle? Reason I say this is in that location the "E" might be a designator. The true serial number on the tang or under the lever somewhere might show what it actually is.

The serial number is on the left side of the receiver and is without any doubt starts with a capital E it is very plain to see. Thanks again. Terrill 0 -
There are some things that might narrow it way down. Here are some considerations that might help, or at least be interesting.
The 99E Light weight rifle was made from 1922 to 1934.Serial numbers in that range are from 244500 to 345800 (approximately).
The 99E "Economy Carbine' was made from 1960 to 1984.Both had lever safety.(Although they switched to tang safety on other models in 1960, the "E" retained the old style lever safety).
What caliber is it? Late E's were .300, 308 or 243. .250 was added in 1983 (the last year).
Does it have a pistol grip cap?
Schnabel forend (knob at tip)? or rounded?
Buttplate hard rubber or steel?
Can you tell if checkering is pressed or done by hand?
I think Savage started using the Letter prefix in 1969.By 1976 they started with a C. By 1979..a "D".

The 99E pre-war was not chambered in .243 Win.
The .243 was introduced by Winchester in 1955 according to Cartridges of the World, while the original 99E ended production in 1934. That should have been a clue.
The post-war 99E Carbine was made from 1960 to 1982, and it was chambered in .243 Win.
The hardwood stock was manufactured towards the end of the production run, so that should give you a good guess about the date of manufacture.
I had a 99C post-war chambered in 7mm-08 with the serial number E0258xx, so the serial number given by 338magnut is good.0 -
