454 casul 460 S&W

I just bought a contender Encore frame on GB, and I am looking to build a 460 S&W on it as a carbine. I already have 2 454 casul revolvers I am assuming I can shoot 454's at least on a limited biases in the 460 smith. I realize the accuracy will suffer and you would want to clean it if you shot very many of the shorter rounds, but with that said I like survival type guns that I can chamber multiple rounds if I need to. I have been reading on the internet and I haven't got a definitive answer, so I thought I would ask you guys.

the 454 casull will fire in the 460 S&W chamber like a .38 Spl in a 357 mag. BUT, I'd check into the ability of the Contender to handle the .460 0 -
oh yes that is the reason I went with the encore it is the only Thompson center that is chambered for the 460 smith I am already looking at a 20 stainless barrel for it 0 -
Gotcha, good deal. For some reason I pictured a Contender frame in my mind. Yeah, the .454 Casull will work just fine, as will the .45 Colt. (Like a .327 Federal/.32 H&R Mag/.32 S&W long will all fire in the Federal chambering.) 0 -
Yes so will the 45 GOVERNMENT and the 45 SCHOFIELD
editI HAVE A BOX OF 12 CARTRIDGES 1878 MARKED 45 GOVERNMENT THEY ARE PISTOL ROUNDS NOT 45-70 they were issue for units that had both the COLT 1873 and Schofield you can't chamber a 45COLT cartridge in a Schofield.0 -
thanks everyone I was just a little concerned about the long chamber jump before it hits rifling I just want to make sure that i would not be doing anything that would harm the gun it will be quite an investment by the time i am finished 0 -

The 45 Government is a 45/70 just like the .30 Government is a .30/40 Krag. All the other rounds may work but I doubt they will work well. I have a Thompson Contender barrel in .357 Maximum & .357 Magnums & .38 Specials will work but not all that well.0 -
Yes, you are correct, that you can shoot 454's in that 460 S&W. You can also shoot 45 Colt, and 45 Schofield. I don't think that jump would totall kill the accuracy of the 454, or the 45 Colt. You will be surprised, just like a number of 357's really like 38 Special wadcutter's.

Perry is right, there were pistol rounds marked .45 Government...came about during the S&W Schofield/Colt Peacemaker pistol era so you could tell them apart.
And yes, there are .30 USA (US Army)and .30 Govt marked .30-40 Krag cartridges as well, I have one with the USA marking in my collection box.0 -
I don't think shooting shorter less powerful shells will hurt your gun. I do think that accuracy will suffer due the longer travel to rifleing. Clean chamber before going to longer shells. I like to see the results of your range test. 0
