Age of Savage 99
Trying to find the age of my 99, .300 Savage. One online source said '37 or '38, one said 1918 or later. Gun is marked Savage 99 on top of the front receiver ring, brass rotary magazine with counter window on left side of receiver, small cresent shaped serrated metal saftey on the lever, locking the lever in place. Letter Q on front of lever boss area. Color cased lever, small metal cocking indicator. Rear tang is drilled and tapped, looks factory. Sights look factory, rear is typical buckhorn style with elevator, front is brass blade on an integral ramp. Metal serrated buttplate with SVG at bottom part of plate. Plastic checkered grip cap. Probably about 80 percent. Great bluing on barrel, boss area aslo great bluing, lever still has 50% or so case coloring. Receiver a dark grey patina, looks like it was carried alot by the receiver.
I'd like to know the age, also if the sling studs are original, they are unlike any I've seen personally, the are almost like a small bridge, raised in the middle with a wood screw on either side, with a small hole for the stud part of the sling to swivel into.Think of Leaupold turn in style rings, with a small spring loaded retaining button. They certainly look vintage if not original. Also would like to know if this gun had a steel gripcap or plastic, this one is plastic and is cracked, in half, would like to replace it. Thanks a lot guys.
EDIT- Forgot completely to include serial number, 370405. Also no checkering on stock, forearm is schnabel style, looks like a dull oil type finish not varnished. Sorry, no pics

As far as I know there is no published serial number-year made tables for Savage/Stevens made guns. However there is a source for this information. Be advised it ain't free.

In 1949, Savage began stamping a tiny, lightly impressed oval on the lower, front side of the "lever boss".
The "lever boss" is the extension of the lower part of the receiver into which the lever fits and rotates. Inside the oval, Savage stamped the letter "A" together with other numbers which are apparently inspector's numbers.
On many Model 99 rifles, this "oval" is indistinct or difficult to read as are the letters and numbers inside the oval. On my own late model "EG", serial #709XXX, made in 1953, only the upper case letter "E" and the rear half of the oval's circumference (which looks like a large, faint, backwards letter "C") barely show on the lever boss. The front half of the oval's circumference and whatever is inside the oval in front of the letter "E" are indistinguishable.
The letters "O" and "Q" were skipped and not used due to their similar appearance.

It was not a Savage/Stevens. It is a Savage, and there are several published serialization lists. The Blue Book, for what it is worth, says 1937-1928, also.

Thanks guys for the info, any idea if the grip cap is original or did it come with a metal one? I need a replacement, am already aware of Brownells, Midway, JAck First, Numrichs, etc. 0
