S&W 29-2
i just got one this weekend and was looking at blue book and it states that the bbl is 6 & 1/2 inches long but mine measures at
5 & 7/8's or 6". WTH [?]and it is a 29-2 on the frame when you open cylinder.can you enlighten me

My 29-2 has a 6.5 inch barrel. My daughter's 29-4 has a 6 inch. Perhaps the previous owner did a barrel swap with a later model.
Reference comments below, they do make sense. I got my 29-2 with the 6.5 inch barrel in 1973.0 -

Per "The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson";
The S&W M29-2 was made from 1962 to 1982
In 1979 the 6 1/2" barrel was dropped in favor of 6" for standard length
The 6 1/2" barrel will usually bring a 10* premium even though the 6" is less common.

Just checking, we measure the barrel of a revolver from the front of the barrel to the place where the barrel almost meets the cylinder.

Jim pretty much exlained it, the barrel lengths were changed in 1979. The 6 1/2 inchers would all be 29-2 or earlier. 0 -
