AR front sight adjustment
The manual from my M&P 15 sport says it came with a tool to adjust the front sight. I did not get one. Where can I get one? Is there another way to adjust it? Thanks

Cool. My Erma Trainer from WWII only has a drift adj of the front sight in the dovetail for windage. My 10 5/8 S&W 29's have 4 tiny set screws in the front to allow dead on hold for every 50 meters. Could you make a tool from a piece of correct size tubing and file some notches to depress the detent?0 -

All elevation and windage adjustments are in the rear. You still need to set the front sight for zero to the shooter.0 -
Really no need to invest in the tool. The sight post can be adjusted using a bullet tip or any other similar pointed implement to press the detent and rotate.
As has been said, it's never touched after the rifle is zeroed for the individual shooter - and this shouldn't require much. I can't speak for S&W's rifles, but when dealing with Colt's AR/M16 manufacturing process this should be a maximum of three clicks.
Their upper receivers/barrels/front sight bases are assembled, then the mounting holes for both the front and rear sights are laser cut into the receiver and FSB to co-witness with a bore sight. Due to this they come out of their crates requiring only minor adjustment for individual zero.0 -

I'll agree with you on the accuracy of the machining.
The problem is the shooters. They don't come in one standard size 'bottom of cheekbone-center of eye'. Who puts their nose to the charging handle, who holds back, etc., etc. Three clicks is pretty optimistic on how much you may need to adjust that front sight.
A tool is nice to have if you have multiple shooters, i.e. father/son, grandfather/grandson or friends at a match. Know your zero with these things and a tool makes for a quick change back and forth. If this will be for one shooter do as Txs says and use a bullet tip (preferrably fmj) to adjust it and leave it, where it will stay for the duration of that shooter.0 -

To give you an idea, each click of an M4's front sight changes POI close to 1.25in. at 100m. More than three clicks and you're shooting a long way from that rifle's true zero.
More than this amount of front sight adjustment from mechanical zero with an M16 falls outside the acceptable range of 'fine tuning' the sights to the individual. It indicates poor technique and this should be addressed through training.
Cranking sights simply to compensate for poor technique is a crutch that should be avoided with any type of gun.0 -

I hear what you are saying. I'll agree that too much adjustment is definitely out of the ordinary. I won't agree that it is always misuse.
But, you do bring up an outstanding point in this, to be careful not to just keep adjusting when the shooter has bad form behind the rifle. As long as the shooter maintains one position on the rifle (as tight as he can) and his groups are going up or down for POA, but still tight, then I would still adjust the front sight up or down to match POA to POI @ 25m.
