Winchester 70 338 alaskan receiver .458
I picked up a model 70 338 25" Alaskan, serial number places it 1960, correct time period for an Alaskan.
Problem is when I stripped the rifle down to clean and oil before it went in the safe, I found under the receiver was marked .458 on the tab.
Do I have a mismatched rifle?

How many ovals on the barrel? Just thinking it may have been rebarreled. Can you post some good, clear, close pictures?

Not real clear pictures tonight will try better in natural light.
and also looks like a reblue, roll marks are not real sharp.

Looks good to me.. Winchester used .458 stamped receivers for all the Winchester Magnum calibers.. .264 Win Mag, .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag, and .458 Win Mag.. From the pictures, the blue and roll-marking appear correct.. 0 -
Also, IIRC, the .458's were Super Grades. 0 -
Yep, what hangfire said. They marked all the magnums 458. Looks correct to me too. Lets see the rest of the gun. 0
