rifle scope technology question

I've heard it before, but can't recall the specifics.

Could someone give me an explanation for early rifle scopes requiring such a long tube?

If nothing else, any links with this info will do.

  My Gramps said it was to the eye like a peep sight; required you to really look where you aimed; I think it's to get you used to something poking you in the eye.[:)]

  Biggest factor is the number of lens used and compound lens on modern scopes let the scope be much shorter also early scopes. Early scopes also had external adjustments very hard to adjust for 1/4 inch at 100 yards if the external adjustment were on scope rings 3 inches apart.

  I'm with gunnut505, and Perry on this one. The original idea was to emulate a peep sight. That took a long way to get the accuracy that warranted a scope. Just like a longer barrel with a sight on the end for longer sight radius. As the optic sight industry progressed it became what Perry Shooter describes. A manufacturer had to get the distance between lenses right to maximize visual acuity. It wasn't until we had the ability to grind/polish multiple curvatures that we could shorten scopes to what we have today.
