AK Optic mount question
Which is better...The side mounted scope rail or the receiver cover with a rail attached?
I'm wanting to put an optic on my ak (not a scope) and I need help figuring out which one to get.
All help and info with be great!
Thanks!

I like the B Square receiver mount or the fore grip tactical style mount made by UTG and others. I like these better than the ones you mentioned but to each their own. To answer your question, I like the side mounted rail better because it does not move as much as the receiver cover mounted rail. Hope this helps. 0 -
Side mounted are steadier, moreover, some sit high enough to allow the use of iron sights, 0 -
I would go with a side mounted receiver mount. I think its funny that all those experts that say that receiver cover mounts for SKS's were junk but for some reason the AK receiver cover mounts are okay. The SKS's receiver covers are a lot stronger then the AK's are go figure. 0 -
Look around until you find one of the older receiver covers that has a trim-to-fit metal tab on the front. They are much less wobble-prone than the el cheapo ones with retaining screws in the back. 0 -
Most receiver cover mounts are junk and will not hold zero.
Depending on the optic, I would look into one of these 3 options:

I have a Russian Kobra red dot on my Sar 1. It works for hitting the target but has 2 deficiencies:
1. Poor battery life - 70hrs always on out of 2 AA batteries.
My Aimpoint Comp M4 has 80,000hrs of always on battery life.
2. Does not co-witness with iron sights. The Kobra sits high and obscures the iron sights completle. I like that 3rd link above and plan to get one.0
