Rem 700 Extractor Problem
I thought I had a brass case resizing problem with my Rem 700 Classic in 300 Weatherby. Once fired brass resized in RCBS full length dies with RCBS shell holder. Very hard to close the bolt so thought I wasn't resizing fully; reset the die and ran the brass through again. Raised the issue on the reloading forum and Ambrose suggested it might be an extractor problem rather than resizing as the bolt could be easily opened and reclosed on the case once it was closed. However, removing the brass and reinserting it resulted in the same hard to close bolt situation. There are fine slivers of brass on the bolt face. I tried the bolt from my 700 7 mag in the 300 and it closes much easier on a case. So, I assume it is an extractor problem even though with visual inspection it looks the same as the one in the 7 mag bolt. Is there a fix I may be able to do or does it need to go to a gunsmith?
It is once fired Weatherby factory brass. I'm guessing this is the "old style" extractor as the rifle is the Classic built in 1989 I think. I bought it recently and it looked unfired or fired very little. I'll get it to a gun shop today and try some new ammo. Given how hard it is to close the bolt replacing the extractor may be the right answer. I'll update after checking new ammo. Thanks much for the advice.

I think it depends on how well you can see up close and how handy you are with a stone. Call your local gunsmith and see what they get to replace the extractor and rivit parts and labor + the wait time if they don't stock those parts. You might try pulling the bolt and incerting a case into the bolt and putting the unit back the gun. Have you tried some other brand / lot of brass? Maybe there is some build of brass behind the extractor that doesn't let it relax/expand properly. Perhaps a pee tube flush of wd-40 and a blast of compressed air using a toothpick as a shim. 0 -
One option is to write to Remington, certified mail w/return receipt, and explain the "defect" with the rifle. Remington may want to take it back and fix it to avoid any future problems, ie. litigation. Calling and emails are easy to ignore, but a certified letter has the look of someone who might have been to see an attorney looking for a class action lawsuit. 0 -
The newer extractors don't have a rivet . So are the rims too thick , have you tried other brass or ammo ? 0 -
It's really hard to fully resize a belted mag case more than a time or two without a die that will size right up to the belt.. Larry Willis make a die that will do it... A RCBS die wont do it... 0 -
