Rifle made by C.C. Johnson

I picked up a nice single shot 22 recently made by a C.C. Johnson in Thackery Ohio.The rifle is a Martini action,a bull barrel and Vaver rear sight and a Redfield front sight.The stock is a burled walnut (and must weigh about 12 lbs.)with only a few handling marks.My internet search only revealed Johnson was a gunsmith in the 40's and not much else.Anyone familar with his work? Any info is appreciated. thanks

  From my fading memory; Johnson was leading smallbore competitor in the 40's and 50's. I think he made .22 rimfire target barrels. If you research the American Rifleman and Gun Digest from that era you will often see his name.

  I have encountered at least a half dozen old Winchester Model 1885 high-walls with C.C. Johnson barrels on them. Most of them were made and chambered for the 22-3000, or the later R2 Lovell cartridge which was the old 25-20 S.S. squeezed down to .22 and the case blown out from a bottle-neck to a pronounced shoulder.

  I'm pretty sure that the American Single Shot Rifle Association (ASSRA) holds the original records of C. C. Johnson. You can contact their archivist to see if my memory is correct, however I don't know if you need to be a member of ASSRA or not to get the information if it is available.

  If I ever decided to sell this rifle would it command a premium because it was built by C.C. Johnson.?

  Most likely not. 99.9%+ of the people out there do not know who C.C. Johnson was, and the few that do are all old timers.

  What other markings are on the barrel? A five digit number followed by letters?

  The ASSRA holds the Eric Johnson records (as well as I). A relative of C.C. Johnson can be found at the ASSRA web site and he will supply info, if he has it, on the rifle.
  
  It's been some time since my last inquire about C.C. so the ASSRA might have those records now.
