winchester 190 not semiauto problem
I have had a winchester 190(OK,a Ted williams 3T) foisted on me to put back together. Always love the basket cases. The action parts were all removed, the bolt return spring bent,and the stock thru bolt bent to one side. I thought they fell on it. After working on it, I'm beginning to think they maybe slammed the stock on a tree, as I have thought of doing it myself now. Anyway, after straightening the stock bolt and a new bolt return spring, everything works as it should except that it won't pick up a fresh round from the carrier on firing. I've shortened the return spring in two turn increments to the length of the old spring,and found the barrel was loose, so tightened that but the bolt still doesn't seem to quite pick up a round. It will if pull the bolt back hand, but this makes it a manual. I'm ready to give up, as I've gotten to be quite expert at installing the bolt spring and I don't want to cut any more off until I hear a couple more suggestions. Anybody else have any experience on a 190 or other .22 semiauto with the same grief? Thanks to all.

How is spring in the tube? You might want hose it out and feel for dents/drag by compressing the spring pushing the follower with a rod. How much play is in the lifter assembly? 0 -
Ejects with gusto. Checked plunger, seems to be smooth, tho less tension than I expected and clean. Lifter pops up well, slight play in the pivot hole but doesn't seem to be notched or slotted. If you manually pull the bolt back farther than what I assume is where the bolt is going on firing, the bolt picks up the cartridge without fail. Thanks, I will look at the lifter and bolt relationship again. It's hard to assess how far the bolt travels on blow back, but I'm assuming it isn't going all the way back. Have tried 3 types of ammo. 0 -
Charlie pegged most of this one. One should never assume ANYTHING when haded a bag of parts. The plunger or follower in the magazine tube had been put in backward, so it could not push a cartridge fully onto the lifter. Reversed, problem solved, works and shoots better than it should, as bore really, really lead fouled. Thanks again to Charlie and the experts forum. 0 -
So will it batter itsself to death after shortening the bolt spring . I never shorten a spring until I absolutely can't make another one work . I prefer to lighten springs by going to a smaller wire diameter while maintaining the original length . Then I always have the option of putting the original back if it turns out the problem is elsewhere . Just food for thought , there's no point in solving one problem and creating another . JMHO 0
