It's been awhile, but with the action cocked the knurled part should rotate clockwise when pushed forward at the same time. Opposite to take the safety off.

Push knob IN with the heel of your hand, turn clockwise to engage safety. Push in, turn counterclockwise to release safety.

The safety, as described above, is awkward and clumsy to engage or disengage but it locks up the firing pin solidly.
Remember, push the knob all the way forward as you rotate it with your palm.

No need to feel dumb. Most Americans don't know how to use the original safety on a M91 Mosin or a TT33 Tokarev either.

One thing you might also NEED to know about the Arisaka. Once the bolt has been cocked, it CAN NOT be de-cocked. Once cocked, the only way to de-cock is to pull the trigger on the closed action (DRY FIRE). Attempting to de-cock in the usual bolt action method of pulling the trigger while closing the bolt will usually result in a locked up action.

Actually, at least on the ones that I have, the safety disengages quite easily. Bring the rifle to your shoulder as though you were going to fire it, press that knurled knob with your right thumb (where your thumb naturally makes contact on the right side of the knob), and the safety rotates and disengages pretty much by itself.

Do you know the Arsenal and Series? Might not want to shoot if it's Last Ditch.

He did say that the mum had been de-faced.
They didn't put mums on the "last-ditch" rifles did they?
