Stevens .22 single shot question
I picked up what I think is a nice little .22 rifle this weekend at a garage sale. It is a Stevens take down falling block single shot .22 SN 484. What attracted me to it was the almost like new case hardened receiver and lever and the nice wood. I would say he bluing on the barrel is 90%. The only issue is it looks like someone decided to "customize" the sights. There is small tube soldered on the receiver with a small hole in it meant to serve as a peep sight, the original rear sight has been knocked out of the slot and replaced with a blank that fits in the dove tail and the brass blade on the front sight has been filed down. After a quick cleaning I tried the old rifle out and have to say the modified sight system works well. Can someone tell me from the serial number about when this rifle was manufactured, are replacement sights available to restore it to the original sights and where would I find replacement sights? Better discription: Octagonal barrel for about the first 6 1/2" from the receiver the rest of the barrel is round, overall barrel length is about 22". Screw type plug with a "D" ring unscrews to separate the barrel. Forearm has a small schnable on the end of it. on top of receiver is J Stevens A&T Co./Chicopee Falls/Pat April 17 94. Screw heads look unmolested. Working on pictures.
USN Airdale, yes mine looks just like the one in your oicture except for the sight modifications I mentioned and the condition. The one I picked up looks like it was made last week. If mine is a redo they redid everything, case colors, wood and reblue. Based on that and what the woman told me, I do not think this has been restored. I can e-mail pictures to someone but can figure out how to post it here.

Go to GOOGLE images, and check out "Stevens Favorite" for a match. The D ring brake down screw under the receiver was a standard feature of the Favorite's. Probably a million were made during original production, prior to World War II. From the markings on yours, it's a early one made prior to the First World War. 0 -
Sounds like a Favorite but need pictures. Once you determine what it is, sights come up on the auction side. Could take out the blank and go with the standard open rear sight or go with a Stevens, Lyman, or Marbles rear tang sight. Cape Outfiters has a decent repo of the original Stevens tang sight and there is an original on the Auction side here right now. 0 -

i have a Stevens Favorite, with a S/N very near the one mentioned, that is why i requested photos, does it look like this ?
i have taken mine completely apart once, cleaned every part and reassembled it, so i know how it works.0 -
I have one of the modern ones that does not have the take-down feature.
I have often wondered if the pin that holds the barrel (One of the ones numbered #13 I believe) were removed & replaced by a bolt could the gun become a take-down?0
