Stock Finish
Just received a new Charles Daly o/u shot gun and really don't like the glossy Wlanut stock and forearm. Is there any way that the gloss could be removed to produce a dull finish? any suggestions? Thanks .

I have finished and refinished many stocks over the years, using many different products from oils to poly's,in both water base and oil type.
I know you guy's must have been asked this question before, but I like the high gloss found on some Brownings, Remingtons and others and never seemed to be able to duplicate it for hardness or I should say its ability to resist denting and scratches fom routine take down and assembley, etc.
Anybody have a suggestion? I'm think'n maybe try an automotive clear coat polymer because I havent been able to dupllicate any MFG's finish. Its takes alot of time to refinish a whole stock set just to clean up some scratch's and have it look good, not even considering what refinishing does to the value...Any thoughts????

I would never reccomend tru oil or linspeed in checkering. It dries shiney and gives the checkering the look as if its been badly refinished. I only use boiled linseed oil on checkering. It provides good protection that darkens properly over time, and does not shine. 0 -
Permalyn sealer is good for checkering too , a couple of light coats is all it takes . 0 -
I use pure Tung-Oil, thinned 50-50 with paint thinner.. Apply until nothing soaks in.. Then get a clean cloth, and a soft toothbrush.. Brush the checkering, and rub the brush in the cloth.. Keep doing this until all the excess oil is removed, and the checkering looks dry.. Sometimes I'll repeat this the next day.. The goal is a NO GLOSS look, but showing the checkering as finished/sealed.. 0 -

It's also good for the inletting. Don't forget to seal under the butt plate. Don't know how may stocks I've seen where a pad had been installed and the wood left unsealed.0 -
You betcha , my butts and inletting get the same treatment ! As does the outside if I'm refinishing it , between the stain and the finish ! 0 -
How about a stock that has never been stained or oiled?
Reccomendations for a completely inleted stock, ready to mount but no finish?
This is for a Ruger 77 M11.
I would realy appreciate some reccomendations.
