Modern Rifle Without A Serial No.??
I have a lever action Marlin model 62 in 30carbine.It and 3,999 more left the factory without serial numbers. It was bought new before the GCA took affect in 68-69? Marlin recalled the rifles to be numbered but only a few were sent back to Marlin. Anyhow my delima is.If I sell this gun on Gunbroker to someone in another state and ship it to an FFL in that state will the dealer have to send it back to Marlin to be numbered.

Some dealers are really skittish about serial numbers, even though it left the Marlin factor without one. Long as you can substantiate that it wasn't originally sn'd, I personally don't see the problem.
The best thing to do IMHO is to contact the dealer before shipment, explain the reason it isn't serial numbered. Or note that fact in your auction add. Have the potential purchaser verify that his dealer will accept it for transfer without a SN.0 -
I have run across lots of firearms without s/n working in the ballistics section of my LEO job. Most were pre GCA, I never saw or heard of a problem with someone owning one. I have a few guns my self that are without s/n. As long as it wasn't removed and is in original shape, by law its good to go. That doesnt mean the FFL will transfer it, but I havent seen a problem with it in my own purchases.
Good luck0 -
Many Rifles especially 22 Rimfire did not have serial numbers before 1968 . the dealers around here just note No serial and it is no problem. It is NOT against the law to own or sell a fire arm with NO serial number as long as it never had a serial number Where one gets into trouble is if the serial number that the firearm came with has been defaced or removed. 0 -
Your Levermatic in .30 Carbine was made from 1966-1969. Those made prior to the 1968 GCA were not required to HAVE a serial number. As has been said, possesion, sale, shipping and transfer of a non- serially numbered firearm is perfectly legal in the US- so long as it never HAD one.
I collect older Mossberg 22 rifles. Have about 2 dozen that are listed in my bound book as "No Serial Number".0 -
If you really want one, the BATFE will issue you a serial number that you can have stamped on there. If you really want one. [;)] 0 -
Thanks a bunch for your replies. My only concern was at the time this rifle was made the federal government required gun makers to number all "CENTER FIRE" rifles and keep a record of to whome(wholeseller) they were shipped.Marlin screwed up and tried to recall them. 0 -
Post a link here if you list it on the auction side, I'd be interested in placing a bid! 0 -
