In my opinion Winchester did not install all ribs at the factory it would make a BIG difference Who installed the ribs.

EDITsimmions rib [:)][^] I dont think you hurt the value but others may not agree.

They were all Simmons with their GOOD blueing. At the time I believe they offered two blueings and I bought the better one.

well, you 'down graded' the collectors value (to zero), but you 'up-graded' the shooter value. so I'd call it a wash. Back then Simmons did some very good work.

most of the nodel 42's you see with vent ribs are after market (from what I have seen). simmons would put on ribs for winchester but winchester would polish and blue them. if you sent it yourself to simmons they would put the rib on and you could see their name on the rib. when they put them on for winchester the name was off. I didn't know that simmons offered two grades of polish for their blueing. the ones I have seen have not been as nice as winchester. in any case a nice model 42 even with an after market rib will still bring very respectfull money considering very nice plain barrel guns are in the 1,800.00 range. 12 gage and to a lesser extent 20 gage model 12s just don't seem to bring very much unless there is simething special about them. to get over 350.00 for a plain barrel model 12, 12 gage is going to be difficult.
