s&w frame question

i have a s&w 586. need to know what frame it is. looking for original wood target grips. by the way anyone got any? thanks

"L" frame but uses the same grips as the common "K" frame.

Yup.

586 is built on the "L" frame, which is basically a beefed up "K" frame specifically designed to handle large numbers of full power .357 magnum rounds.

"L" and "K" frames share the same grips, as does the massive "X" frame that Smith built its .460SW and .500SW revolvers on.

The K/L grips are probably the most popular revolver grips in the world and there are tons of aftermarket grips available anywhere you would expect to find revolver grips in all sorts of configurations, wood, rubber, smooth, fingergroove, etc.

Original Smith "target" grips are readily available on the auction site here, or even on Ebay, etc, but the prices of these original Goncalo Alves grips appear to always be going up.

And note, that the 586 has been made in both "round butt" and "square butt" form. While *some* grips might interchange, most will NOT. In addition to matching the frame (K/L) type, you ALSO have to make sure you get the right SHAPE grips for your particular gun (round/square butt):
