SW9ve/SW40ve vs. Ruger P95
So I have a rifle and a shotgun, never owned a handgun, and my wife/parents got together and gave me $400 for my birthday to go buy a handgun. (I wanted a handgun because 1. it's cheap to fire, 2. there's an indoor pistol range right by my house and 3. it's winter so I don't want to be outside shooting my rifle).
I want just a cheap, simple, pistol and after visiting a few shops and looking around on the internet it seems that in my price range the two most popular choices are the Ruger P95 and the Sigma series. I've only ever held the sigma, never the Ruger, so I know only what little information has been posted out there comparing the two. Here's what I know:
Sigma: I like the idea of it being similar to a Glock because that makes it easy to clean/use and is reliable. It's fairly light while being a larger gun but people hate the trigger. I don't like that the mounting system on it is proprietary and you need an adapter to put attachments on it.
Ruger: I like that it has a built in safety and you can fire it single or double action. It seems a bit more complicated to take down and clean and it's also heavier. I like the universal mount on it and from what I read I think you can actually remove, and change out, the sights fairly easily where as the Sigma's are fixed.
Anyone have any personal experience or strong opinions on the matter? Obviously I'm going to go to the shop one last time and hold them both - hopefully at the same shop so I can set them side by side. I'm looking to get the gun, cleaning stuff and some ammo for around the $400.

I've owned all three of those firearms and before all three were good weapons. I enjoyed the Sigmas more because they felt better in my hand. I have big hands so that was the main selling point for me on the Sigmas.
The Sigmas are no longer being made since Glock sued S&W for stealing and copying their design, so parts may or may not be an issue.
The Ruger is a good plinker, in my opinion, and is fairly reliable. It is a heavier gun that the Sigmas only because they are polimer framed. I'm in Law Enforcement and I've always heard that Ruger semi-autos are junk, but I enjoyed the one I had alot! It shot wolf ammo fine and never jammed.
If you're wanting to put a light or laser on your pistol then get the Ruger. I have seen those rail adapters for the Sigmas and the prices aren't too bad but I'm not someone who likes to have to buy extra stuff just to add a light on my gun.
I wouldn't pay too much for the Sigma because just a couple of years ago S&W were selling them for around $100 with the purchase of any of thier guns.
My final advise would be to get a feel for both of them, see if you could shoot them and then decide on which one you want.

The Sigmas are being made again - after they lost the lawsuit they have to pay Glock a certain amount for every one sold. Otherwise a lot of what you said is good advice. I love the way the Sigma feels, which, besides the price, was one of the original draws to the gun. There's just something about the Rugar that I like though; which is why I'm having a tough time. I like the universal mount, the removable sights and the fact it has an actual safety on it.0 -

I agree, to get the Ruger. It is built like a tank, and you can fire any 9mmx19 round in it you want to. It has the double action to single action operating mode, not single action or double action.
The Sigma is the biggest deal out there, but you have what you get, and there is not much for aftermarket goodies for it.
I vote Ruger.

As mentioned, Smith never discontinued the Sigma, it just had to pay Glock royalties to continue producing it (which it did). Sigmas are also made in the USA.
I've shot both.
Bluntly, both are ugly durable guns from good manufacturers.
Of the two, out of the box, for a comparable price, I'll pick the Ruger, because I prefer the more tradtional DA/SA type action, plus the Sigma trigger absolutely sucks.
But I wouldn't turn my nose down on a Sigma if I could get one real cheap. As mentioned, its basically a clone of the Glock. It can be a pretty good gun *IF* you buff it up with a trigger job.0
