"Joe Kidd" stocked handgun?
I am watching "Joe Kidd" on the tube, 1972, Does anyone know what that stocked handgun with the magazine in front of the trigger guard is? I would imagine it to be a small caliber since the magazine is so far forward but I do find it interesting if it is the real thing and not just some television novelty.

Next question is, "Is it in the proper time frame?" The pistol was invented in 1896, thus the '96 in it's nomenclature. But, somehow, with what is going on in Joe Kidd, I don't get the feeling the movie is that late? 0 -

Who cares about time frame? I'm happy when the guns are portrayed somewhat accurately, and I'm ecstatic when someone shows a spas 12 being fired semi auto.

Clint has always been pretty good about the right guns for the right time. That is once he got a little clout on the business. The Outlaw Josse Whales, Pale Rider and Unforgiven all come to mind, they all had the proper firearms for the period.

A lot of those guns in his movies are from his own collection, and are not movie prop repros.
A friend of mine had some of the collection on a temporary display in his restaurant back in the late 80's. I talked him into letting me handle a few after hours one nite. The Remington 1858 Pocket he has in his belt in Pale Rider, is a cartridge conversion, as were almost all the handguns used in the movie.
Kinda strange to have such a nice and extensive collection, and lean toward the anti-gun side.0 -
I ahve not seen that movie in years but if I remember right it was set around the time of the Mexican Land Reform movement; which began around 1910. The pistol would be period accurate but to have seen, much less used, a C96 back in the "old west" would have been highly unlikely. The old Von Lengerke @ Antione catalog from that period shows a C96 with shoulder stock selling for $40, which was well over double the cost of a Colt SAA. One of our ammo experts would know for certain but I do not believe that .30 Mauser ammunition was loaded by any US maker prior to WWII and it would have to be ordered with the pistol. I can picture walking into a hardware store in Tuscon at the turn of the last century and asking for pistol ammo.
"Sure thing; we have .32s, pretty much all of the .38s, .44 and .45. What is your pleasure"?

tom horn tried to escape from jail before he was hung for murder, by snaching a guards pistol(luger), he did not know how to work the safty and failed in the attempt. eastbank. 0
