trap door help

dad gave this to me he has no idea where it came from it's not in the greatest shape.the markings that are readable looks like dec-24-1873 but like i say its pretty hammered right behind the hammer where the # are. this might be where the 45-70 cartridge is from? dont think it a springfield,anyone know?

  I believe its a Remington Rolling Block, which were made in many calibers. I don't have much more information on it, Good luck with it.

  It is indeed a Remington rolling block, not a trapdoor. Often these have the caliber marked on the barrel. If yours doesn't, you'll have to make a chamber cast to determine caliber.
  
  I always wanted a rolling block... I think they're handsome guns. However a lot of them have excessive headspace and sloppy lock up, so before you consider shooting yours I'd have a gunsmith go over the lockwork (and of course determine caliber).

  yup, Rem. #1 rolling block. it 'looks' like one of the .43/11mm rifles built for any one of a bunch on contries (only a chamber cast will tell for sure). you can remove the butt stock to see the ser. #, stamped on the side of the tang.
  "mike the serial # is 47503 is there a way to look up # ?"........not that I'm aware of, they used different ser. # series for each contry, your's has the 'rotary' extractor which puts it in the middel production time frame (1880's to 1900 more of less).
