Taurus PT1911
I'm interested in purchasing a new Taurus PT1911 but a local dealer said Taurus is having major quality control problems right now and getting warrenty work done is almost impossible. Does anyone know anything about this?
Also, does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with Crimson Trace laser grips?

I just purchased a Taurus PT1911 and am wondering if anyone has found a "safer" method to lower the hammer on a round in the chamber. The hammer on this gun seems to be smaller than I am comfortable with and I have not found a better way to do it. Are you aware of a replacement hammer that might provide more space for the thumb to ease it down. 0 -
the 1911 design has an inertia type firing pin. The retainer in the slide lets a small length of the rear of the firing stick out where the hammer can strike the rear of the pin. A light primer hit can be because the Mainspring is to weak or the firing pin does not project far enough out the rear of the firing pin retainer. I would get a new mainspring from Brownell's. 0 -
You might try cutting down the length of the firing pin spring, couple of turns at a time to see if that will improve ignition. Also the main spring might contribute to the problem. Go to Wolffs site to see if they sell replacement springs for that model Taurus. 0 -
my first thought would be to change ammo.try another brand. if your ammo came from wally world, that could be the problem. seen this happen more than twice. now,.. you are going to have members chime in and say taurus is junk,well.. i think not. i have one myself and would bet my life on it. it shoots as well as my gold cup national match.and never dropped the ball. i truly hope ammo is the problem. you have a good firearm. 0 -
as already mentioned, either ammo or mainspring is likely the problem. I've shot a Taurus 1911 and I'll be honest and say it can run with my Kimber all day long. 0 -
DO NOT shorten the fireing pin spring [B)] It's that length for a reason. Check the length of the fireing pin [;)] If OK, get a main spring.
Wolfe springs has any 1911 spring you will need.
Like said try some different ammo first.0 -
does your taurus have the hammer block/lock (allen head screw down the inside of the hammer) this could also interfear with the hammer 'fall' if partialy engaged. 0 -

You did the right (first) thing by taking down the gun and cleaning out the firing pin and spring.
Make sure you also clean out the firing pin CHANNEL (you can blast it with gunscrubber) and you might want to get a good look in there to see if there are any burrs or such.
Other things to try?
1. Make sure CHAMBER is clean and smooth. Its unlikely, but crud in there could slightly buffer a firing pin hit.
2. Try different ammo.
3. Return gun to seller.
4. Return gun to Taurus. In theory they should offer you a lifetime warranty, or some such and fix the gun at no cost. In practice, your gun could be out of service for a while as they deal with this, and I've heard "horror stories" about stuff coming back from Taurus customer service after months unfixed. So this would be one of the "last resort" things.
5. Swap firing pin and/or hammer springs.
On Taurus guns, as good as they may be, you'd hope they should run OK out of the box. IMO, the big issue with them isn't build quality, its quality control. . .guns that shouldn't may leave the factory.0 -
