Magnaport Ruger .357 SP101 2.25" - Good/Bad Idea?
Would magnaporting a 2.25" .357 Ruger SP101 be a good idea or bad idea. I do not like shooting skeet beside a ported shot gun due to noise so will this really increase noise? My ported XD .40 cal produces lots of flash but the muzzle flip is reduced so would bright flash/noise be worth it on the 2.25" SP101 to reduce muzzle flip. Would this increase felt recoil?

I can't see spending money on a 2" ruger, I am no expert but just can't see any negligable reduction on such a short barrell vs the price it would cost to do it. shoot 38's and save the porting money for ammo. 0 -

Magnaporting will reduce some felt recoil..with an increase in blast/flash with the diversion of gasses upwards/outwards instead of all straight-ahead. In a 2-3" barrel, the photography-quality flash from a magnum is going to be there ported or not. I have a Dan Wesson 2" and a S&W 2.5" .357 in the safes, I doubt they'd get a huge lift from porting, and they really light up a room with magnum ammo. I also have a 2" SP101 in .38, which is reasonable flash/recoil wise with everything put through it.
Is it worth it? If you want to do it go ahead, it's your gun and your money. I'm not the worlds biggest fan of magnum recoil in little guns, so I'd take the advice of the other poster and use .38's in it if it were me.0 -
You might reduce the felt recoil, depending on the load, by 30-40%, also depending on the porting style. However, if you think shooting skeet next to a ported shotgun is annoying, you have seen nothing yet. In the line of medium bore handguns, there is not much that compares to the noise a 357 Magnum revolver makes. I have shot a lot of medium bores, and medium bore magnums...32 H&R, 38 special, 357 magnum, 9mm, 10 mm, 41 magnum, 44 magnum, and 45 colt. By porting that 357, you will increase the blast by 200%, if not more. Every time you pull the trigger, it will feel like you slapped yorself in the face as hard as you can.
I might be a little biased against breaks, as I dislike them for the increased blast. I don't even like them on my hard kicking rifle's either...an added bonus to that s that it keeps the fiance' from shooting them...hehehe.
IMHO, stay away from the break on that short of a gun.

A 2.25 inch gun is not a target gun. Unless you are planning on using it for body guard work for some big time world figure. Then, how many times do you hear of world figures having their security forces shooting at people? Drug lords maybe, but they do not carry 2.25 guns.
I would not spend the $. Practice with 38 special till you can hit a paper plat at a few feet and let it go. Concealed carry and self defense is only to remove an immediate threat. You will not be shooting at 50 yards and if you do you may be the one going to jail.
If you ever have to shoot someone you will never notice the difference from 38 special or 357 mag. I doubt you will remember how many times you shot till you look. It will also change your life.0 -
Buy Pachmayer Compact round butt grips and shoot 110 or 125 JHPs - not much kick at all. 0 -
I wonder which cost more? The cost of porting or what the Ruger is worth. Magna-Port is one of the better small porting styles. If the barrel is good and you know you're not going to get the porting out on the sale of the gun go for it. 0
