reloading for a 10 ga damascus double
have a H Pieper 1881 patent side lever hammer double in 10 ga- I have already 'proofed' this with some low pressure shells from RST- they are however expensive- like $13 for a box of 10- where can I get some reloading components and equipment for these shells? should I reload in smokeless or BP??

Wouldn't be using smokeless powder for reloading. There are a number of low pressure BP substitutes on the market, pyrodex is one of the more common ones.

Low pressure smokeless is perfectly fine as long as you keep the pressure < 7500 psi. There are a number smokeless powders available that meet that criteria. Your local SASS chapter would be a good place to start gather information. 0 -

Why not just handload your old shells?
Unless you fire it frequently. Its a good hobby and you will know what you have after you decide on your measures.0 -
The late Sherman Bell did an excellent article on smokeless and black powder burn curves and pressures. They were published in the "Double Gun Journal" several years ago, and in those articles he lists loads and powder choices that yield combinations that are compatible with Damascus barreled guns IN GOOD CONDITION. Any load that would be deemed safe in a 12ga gun would be safe in a 10ga. 0 -
If it were mine I would stick with black powder or a black powder substitute. Some think they should not be shot period. I would recomend having it checked by a gunsmith who knows damascus barrels. 0 -

Thank you all for your input- I do know a fellow who does load his own BP shell for cowboy action, I will look him up- and yes, I have the DGJ for the past 6 years or so, I'll re-read up on the articles there- have had a competent gunsmith look gun over- it is in very excellent functional shape, locks tight, no wiggle, and barrel thickness is .050

Several years ago this subject came up in GUNS and AMMO magazine . Do not remember which writer it was but they did a series of articles on damascus barrels. In good conditions they can be safe to shoot . Need a reliable gunsmith to check them out before and stick to black powder pressure loads limits 0
