Hawes .44 magnum
From what I can gather, they were made by Sauer? What else can anybody tell me about them?
I have a guy who wants to swap me a blued model and some cash for a rifle of mine. It would just be a shooter for me.

You understand although they were made by Sauer, and were descent quality. They haven't been made or imported for over 30 years.
Most of the younger folks don't know a Hawes from a pimple on their butt. Because of this they don't have nearly the resale value of a Ruger BH. If it's in good shape as far as timing and lockup is concerned, it might or might not be a good deal? A 30+ year old 44 mag might be as loose as a goose, if it's been rode hard and put away wet. Depending on what kind of rifle and how much he is sweetening the pot, would have a great bearing on the deal.0 -
They were not all that good of quality. 2003 blue book says $150-275. The Virginian Dragoon (hammerli) was a way nicer pistol. 0 -
i know of one that had the barrel split like a banana..could not confirm if ammo or gun problem 0 -
I've got one I've been shooting for about 15 years, no problems. It's the fixed sight with steel frame. It's little brother with the brass frame in .45 LC has been a regular shooter for about 6 years, both were acquired used.
Typically there are parts available on the auction side but all I ever needed was another set of grips, there's a guy in Tombstone who makes custom ones for them so thats no prob.

i have several including a pair of silver city marshalls and have found them to be nice revolvers...all steel but the 22's are part alloy so not the interest .. 0 -
have several arminius revolvers nib and they have a transfer bar safety ...very well made and other than the hammer transfer bar setup most parts will interchange with 1st gen colt...no real collector interest but they are good shooters 0 -

Sauer and Arminus are two different makes of German revolvers. Arminus still produces revolvers, last time I checked EAA was still importing them. Sauer hasn't made any in years, specializing in semi-auto pistols since the late 70's.0 -
I own one of these. I've had it since 1990 (bout 21yrs). Took it in a partial trade for a four-wheeler. Didn't think much of it until I played with it some. Very well built. I wouldn't take twice the going rate for it . I've never had a single problem shooting anything through it. The only way I would fault it is that the front edge of the grip can "bite" a little under recoil. But can't any though? I would take the swap if I were you. Just my .02 0 -
rufe-snow said it right, most folks wouldn't know one if they saw it. I doubt any of the folks claiming the pistol is of inferior quality ever owned one or put a fraction of the rounds through one as I have mine. True, Sauer made some low-end .22's with alloys, plastic, etc. However, the large caliber Western Marshalls (specifically the .44 magnums) I have seen have all been of excellent quality. Don't let these folks steer you away from it. Unless it's been mistreated, it should be a fine pistol. 0 -

We are still in the negociating process, but it is in pretty dang good shape physically and everything is real tight on it. Our trade would put a value of $250-$275 or so on his Hawes revolver. I thought that was a pretty good price for something that felt as solid as this piece does....just didn't know a lot about them until I started this thread and did some of my own research. My original instinct was to go for it seeing that I have wanted a Ruger Vaquero in .44 for a while. I will update this thread or start a new one(looks like we got 10 responses) with the final outcome. Again, I appreciate all the help folks!
