Winchester Model 70 date of manufacture
I have a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in caliber .358 Winchester, serial number 342940. A couple references state date of manufacture to be 1954. Other references say Winchester introduced this caliber in 1955. Can this be explained perhaps by receiver manufacture was actually 1954, and rifle completed and offered for sale in 1955? Or a 1955 model with production actually started in '54? Or??? Also, approximate number produced in this caliber?

According to the information in my reference, Model 70 serial number 342940 was manufactured in early July, 1955.0 -
OOPS! Winchester's own table, but subsequent review shows I was one line off on the years and serial numbers. I guess another Bifocal failure... Thank you! 0 -
Paul, I just picked up a M70 in .358 from a friend. Originally owner's son. It originally was sold new in PA! Small world... 0
