25-20 Improved
Have any of you guys had any experience with a 25-20 Improved? My Marlin 1894 25-20 has a damaged chamber and the gunsmith recommended reaming it out to a 25-20 Improved. Also does anyone make dies for this cartridge? I really hate to make a wall hanger out of this fine old rifle. It is a great old varmint gun.

I suggest you have the barrel relined by SOMEONE that SDPECIALIZES
in this type of work If you modify the chamber your rifle may NOT feed correctly. along with making this a HANDLOADING
ONLY Rifle. DO IT RIGHT0 -
You may want to look at the .255 Dean. It is supposed to be the top of the scales for the
old 25/20 case.
You will get some very respectable performance
by handloading it.
I would rechamber an oldie before I rebarrel it.0 -
Babun I agree with you on rechambering VS rebarrel.or relining.I'm afraid it would cost more than the rifle is worth. I will look into the 255 Dean sounds interesting. And I handload for the 25-20 anyway. thanks 0 -
Read this 2nd post down on the shooters forum about Harry Dean and his .255.

it depends on how messed-up the chamber is. the first option, if the damage isn't too deep would be to remove the barrel, shorten the breech end by removing one thread, run a standard 25-20 reamer in, then resetting it. the rifle would be near original and have a like new chamber. 0 -
Ray B Never thought of that. I could be the answer I'm looking for . Will check with my gunsmith. I'll leave follow up info thanks 0 -
If you set the barrel back, you will have to set the magazine tube back the same amount, even set the foreend back.
I think it would still give a better outcome than a wildcat.0 -
Just shorten the mag tube and the forearm the same amount as the barrel. 0 -
I think it was Redman that made liners for the 25-20 with enough meat at the action end to cut a new chamber. 0 -
