model 70 serial numbers
I have several M70s that are G series (post 1968) that have 5 digit serial numbers. how can this be? Five digit numbers were done in 1947.
Also can anyone help me out with serial numbers for serial numbers after 1992.
Thanx Curtis [?]

The 5 digits w/o the G are different than with the G. I saw a "Classic" or whatever they called the reintroduced pre-64 style M 70 that was made in 1991 and its # was G& five digits. I saw another G+5 and it was made in 1992 or 93; and another M70 with G+6 digits made in 1996; so depending on the number it would likely have been made between 1991 and 1995. 0 -
One reason is Winchester changed ownership more than once and new owners did not care what serial numbers the old owners had used. They could have started with serial # one if they had wanted to. 0 -
In model 70's, you are correct, a 5 digit rifle is pre WW2 to the late '40's approximately.
The "G" prefix started in 1968, I believe.
Since the "G" is part of the serial number, it makes a whole new set of unique serial numbers.0 -
the letters were added primarily as a result of the 1968 GCA that required gunmakers to have a unique serial number for every gun they produced, regardless of model- so Model 70s got "G" added to the number. 0
