Today I saw a 1912 winchester, 12 guage, with straight checked grip, and an old style round, checked foreend. As I examined the inside of the slide rail for the gauge, I noticed a "T" on the rail up a few inches from the 12 for gauge. Anyone have an idea what the "T" means?

Make sure it is not plastic off the shells coating the chamber The chamber is larger than the bore so bore brush does NOT clean the chamber get a 10 gage bore mop and some JB bore cleaner to polish the chamber/

Shooter's Choice does OK on plastic residue. +1 for a proper sized chamber brush. I'd try some other shells to make sure it not just the one you are using.

added I like JB's bore paste. Inspect the chamber with the barrel off if you can. A split dowel with crocus cloth strips and a drill motor. It's a lot easier to polish more out than to put it back, check often - test firing would be in my plan.

The gun was nib a month ago so it only has about 200 rounds thru it and is clean. I've tried a few different shells, steel and brass bases as well.

YOU MAY NEED TO POLISH THE CHAMBER AND/OR THE CHAMBER RING, THESE ARE LATER M-12'S AND NOT UP TO 'PRE' 64 STANDARDS. ALSO, THE STEEL BASED SHELLS ARE NOTED FOR THIS.

I had a similar problem a few years back with a 1950's M12. After MUCH grief I figured out it was NOT the shell getting stuck in the chamber if was the action slide getting stuck on the machined ring on the magazine tube... Maybe not what's going on with you but... Just saying it might be not what you at first think. Once you get the spent shell out of the chamber, check to see if it goes back in easily. If it does and the extractor pulls it out and it cycles as it should then i'd consider taking the action slide off the Mag tube and see if there''s a rub spot where the actions slide runs on the mag tube ring.
