Here's an older post on the subject:

The third on the list, called only "Dan", seems to specialize in crosshair repair/replacement.
    Good luck.

Their is a scope repair guy in Tulsa, Oklahoma that I've heard is good at repairing all kinds of scopes.

Do a bing search for Iron sight, Inc, Tulsa, Ok, Mike Sexton, 918 445-2001.

I've not used their services, but heard they are good and reasonable.

You Might also search some forums about the name for reviews!

I stick to replacing crosshair wires on ONLY Unertl & Lyman & Fecker external adjustment scopes and the Weaver 330 and M73B1 sniper scopes as well. No cleaning or other repairs. Turnaround time is immediate, as I usually get the scopes fixed and back in the next days mail. No 6 or 8 month wait...Price for crosshair wire replacement is $85 and I'll pay return shipping. For Do It Yourselfer's, I also sell the best crosshair wire money can buy for about 20 years now. Its annealed Tungsten, is very strong & shows up Jet Black when installed. I have two diameters to choose from. Medium (.0015") and Fine (.0005"). Price is $15 per 10 foot length of either wire. I'll pay return shipping to anywhere in the lower 48. USA sales ONLY, please. US Postal Money Orders ONLY, please.
    Please communicate by email.

The Bausch & Lomb Balvar scopes used a tapered crosshair because the inherent design of the scope would magnify and enlarge the reticle when power was adjusted upwards. The tapered crosshair did enlarge when power was increased, but since it always tapered to finer center lines, there was no apparent enlargement. The crosshairs were on a different focal plane than current-design variable scope reticles. This method also eliminated any reticle shift, and point of impact change, when magnification was changed.

All Scopes with a second focal plane reticle, will magnify the reticle, when the power is adjusted upwards. Even in todays world this still holds true.

There are a substantial number of high end manufacturers out there who offer first focal plane reticles, where the reticle does not grow, and the subtensions, can be used to range find at any given power. They are used predominantly in the military sniper rifles, and in sniper competitions, which is one of the fastest growing shooting sports currently on deck.

As for the Balvar, I would try the guy in Tulsa, as I have heard he does a fine job. I had one of those 1980's vintage B & L, Balvars, and tossed in the garbage, as it was nothing but pure, pricey junk.

My Zeis scopes' reticles magnify as power is increased. I use it as a poor man's range finder. These scopes are 30 years old.
