Garand Gas Cylinder
I've observed that when installing the gas cylinder on a Garand there are three to four threads of the locking ring that "allow" the gas port to show through the hole. All the way in puts the rear ring pretty close to the front hand guard. All the way out leaves a 3/16" +/- gap. Is there a "correct" placement?? I think this plays a fairly significant roll in the vibration issue associated with accuracy? I haven't tinkered with this on the range but was wondering if there was a "best" starting point?

Personally I crank it down until the handguard is tight, then back off one turn so there is a little rattle. 0 -
IIRC (don't have manual with me) by hand tighten until snug than back off until aligned. Install gas plug and tighten with combo tool. 0 -
Agree with the first two comments. I just completed the CMP Advanced Maintenance Course where we each built from parts a Garand under instruction of the staff of the CMP custom Shop. We were instructed that the front hand guard should have a fair amount of slop/movement, whatever you want to call it. It should not be tight. As I recall, this improves barrel harmonics, and if it is tight as things heat up during firing the point of impact can change. 0 -
Just make sure that it is firmly in place without any excessive force, and you're good to go. What oldWinchesterfan said sounds correct. 0
