Bausch & Lomb made a 2 pc. scope mount that attached to the 2 sight holes in the left rear of the receiver. That mount was designed to be used with the non-internal adjustment 1" scopes as made by Bausch & Lomb and others. Some wood might have to be removed from the stock in that area though.

EDIT: See #457150720 and #457559374 on the auction side.

If you get an older long scope such as a Unertl or Lyman it can be mounted using bases mounted to the ring and the barrel.

You need not remove wood to mount the Bausch & Lomb scope mount. It was contoured to nicely clear the wood. I have a 1954 300 H&H M-70 with a straight tube, externally adjusted B&L Balvar. This is the only proper way to mount glass on a pre-64 if one is sensitive to the correctness of old guns. It just looks cool, and is super rugged. Mine was run over lengthwise by an ATV in a bean field, and held zero. The old stuff was good. You can pick up Balvars and external adjust mounts cheaper than a new Leupold. Yes, it will have a straight, crosswire reticle, but it will be anvil tough and correct.

Actually, a Lyman Targetspot or Supertargetspot or Litschert in external mounts is correct also.

As are OLD Weavers, Lyman Alaskans, small-tube Leupolds, Stiths, etc. in Stith mounts of one kind or another made to attach with factory scope holes and/or peep sight holes.

Thanks for the info. Have a possibility of picking up this rifle and do not want to modify it in anyway so I will be looking into these items. I do think it would be nice to have it period correct also.

If the bridge is undrilled, it is likely not only Pre-64 but Pre-War. easiest way to tell is by the bolt sleeve/safety lever, or you can resort to the serial number.
