Steel shot in Win M12?
I previously had a shotgun with removable chokes so steel shot wasn't a problem, however that gun went to a new home and now I find I have a box of Winchester Super Steel 16 ga Max DE, 7/8 oz #4 shot. It's the old white box with red and orange stripes, so I guess it's about 15 years old. I'd be shooting them in a M12 that left the factory as a full choke but had the barrel shortened and a Poly Choke installed.
1. Does the wad in this factory ammo protect the barrel from being scratched by the shot?
2. I can set the choke to 0 if need be, but would any amount of choke be asking for trouble?

I'm not sure what type and thickness of the wad. I doubt they it would scratch the barrel or cause damage at no choke but why risk it for one box of shells unless it was the last box on the planet. 0 -
In my personal experience, that will not be any problem at all. I've shot over 1,000 rounds of Federal 16 ga steel shot from an older M-12 with a fixed (original) full choke. It still gauged full after all the steel shot was gone. I'm using steel shot in a 12 ga M-12 with a poly choke this season. I don't even think about it any more. 0 -
Those shell will not hurt the M12 barrel, but they would
sure pound hell out of the original choke. Open that Polly
up to about improved cylinder and have at 'em .0
