red vs green laser sight
What is the scoop on red vs green laser sights? I have used several red laser sights over the years,but not the new green ones. Whats up??

The wavelength of the green is somewhat easier to see in "natural sunlight" Much quicker for the eye to "pick-up". 0 -
I didn't know the difference either? Got talking to one of the sellers at a gunshow. Green has a larger, more expensive mechanism, to generate the green laser beam.
Don't really know, or understand the fine points of the science involved? Unless their is a technical breakthrough. You're not going to have a small green laser, like the red ones there selling now. Unless you're willing to spring big money.0 -

As rufe, and riley suggest, the green has a higher energy wavelength. It makes it more visible in daylight, and easier to pick up at night too.
Yes they are more expensive than the red laser's, even though they have come down dramatically in price. Another down side, is that there are no free lunches. If they give more energy, you have to feed them more energy. They have less than half of the normal battery life of the red ones, usually. YMMV

The US and NATO have always used red lasers, the Soviets used green lasers.

Green lasers cost more, the mechanisms are more bulky, and the "guts" are more sensitive to temperature and vibration. EG, they don't like cold much. But the green dot appears much brighter to the human and and is therefore much easier to see, especially in daylight.
That's the long and short of it.
Green lasers aren't really "new" but its only been fairly recently that the cost of these has decreased to the point where they're commonly available as consumer gun sights.
Green lasers are more likely to create an illuminated "trail" through water vapor or other particles in the air. That makes them cool to play with at night, but more likely to give away the position of the laser holder.
Given similar nominal laser power intensity (ie same mW rating) the green lasers drain batteries much faster.
In theory, you could "get away" with a lower power rating green laser to have similar brightness, and therefore less power draw, but in practice all the commercial units are manufactured to max legal class power draw, so the red ones last longer.0 -
