M1 Carbine cracked slide
I recently purchased a NPM m1 Carbine. It started out with about every 3rd round either failing to feed or stovepipe. I bought a new mag and this seemed to help a lot. I might get a stovepipe on the last 1 or 2 rounds left In the mag.
After my research I was breaking it back down to soak the bolt, check and maybe replace the operating spring. I was just starting this whole process when I discovered the crack in the slide.
the slide operated smoothly for the 50 rounds or so that I put through it, never jammed or had to pull on it with any strength. The bolt never separated from the slide either.
Has anyone seen this before?
Is this a problem from years of wear or indicative of a larger problem?

Your receiver may have been made by NPM, but it has likely been rebuilt one or more times. Most parts have markings that indicate who made them, & it would help if you were to give us all markings on your operating slide, as it may or may not be a USGI forged & milled part.
Also, are there import markings on your receiver or barrel? Korean Army carbines were often well used, & their armorers would repair them with welds when parts ran out.

EDIT: UN would be correct for an original NPM contractor operating slide. W indicates a Winchester bolt. Should have been a good op slide, but stuff happens. It would be a good idea to replace the operating slide spring when you replace the operating slide.0 -
Yeah, was an armorer rebuild at some point. No import marks and:
Slide "UN", Postal Meter?
Bolt "W" Winchester
Guide for the recoil spring, not sure of the name, has an "I"
Trigger Housing marked "Inland"
Any other needed markings please let me know.

Looks like a structural defect to me. Got any buddies that are expert welders? I would acquire a new replacement and see about welding the crack up. What ammo are you shooting? 0 -
Yeah, already shopping for a new one and just regular ole 110gr Aguila. 0 -
It's happens and probably was the cause of the stovepipes. I've never actually seen that happen on anything but a Universal.
Just replace it with a GI op rod.
UN=UNDERWOOD.0 -
Judging on the location of the crack, I would guess maybe a round got stuck in the chamber and someone used a mallet on the handle area to open it.
I would just discard it and buy another GI slide.0 -
Thank You all for the replies. New one being bought on GB. 0 -
It's in an unstressed location. I'd find a good TIG welder to fix it up.
I suspect it's an abused casting and not an original forged GI part.
Unlike Garands, carbines dont jam to the extent you need to stomp on their operating handles. Even when Garands do jam badly, I've never seen a broken handle.0
