For deer hunting: Remington Express Cor-lokt 180 gr softpoint. 20 for 22.95. Neck shot snaps their necks, knocks em down every time.
    1948 Winchester Model 70 30-06 Gov't
    Surplus military for anything else.

Anything marked "ON SALE", the 30-05 with a 150-180 grain bullet is the John Deere tractor of the gun world. It will do what it is asked to do time after time, day after day.

No deer can tell the difference in the cost of the bullet that hit them. [:)]

i,ve reloaded since the late 50,s, but i have used 165gr winchester power points(24.00) in a emergency with good results. according to T.S. uncle albert, one of the i don,t give a crap crowd.

I'd stick with Remington or Federal. We had very disappointing results with Winchester from several lots. In addition, Winchester PowerPoint has the worst "pointed bullet" trajectory of any-very much like round nose performance.

Another vote for Remington Core-Lokt, except I have backed off over the years from 180 gr to 150 gr slugs to flatten it out as much as possible.

I like the Federal basic line, Hi-Shok, in 150 or 180. Good accuracy and plenty of power for the job.

Bpost advice is sound. I prefer the Winchester 150 grain power point but any of the standard offerings from Federal, Remington or Winchester will get the job done.

See what they have in stock. Clean your bore well with something like Shooter's Choice. Fire a fouling shot, then a three shot group off a rest at 100 yards. 4" or less is a meat gun, less than 1" exceptional (buy all you can of that lot). 165 grain is a good weight, boat tails if you shoot 300 or more yards.

Have any buddies you can try 5 rounds of their factory ammo. Partial boxes of factory stuff from gun shows can be a good source.

Dropped my deer in its tracks with the Federal Power Shok 150 grain soft point.
