unertl bases will work, i think the bases need to be the same hight. i have bases some where around here. i had one of the malcom scopes and it was not up to snuff. a lyman super target spot scope or a unertl would be a better deal. according to T.S. uncle albert, one of the i don,t give a crap crowd.

I have several Winchester 52's, 75's and 70's setup with Lyman Targetspot and Supertargetspot scopes. the 52's and '75's, and the 70 Targets, use barrel mounted scopes.

These rifles were shipped with the correct bases; Lyman and Unertl also offered bases.

I would suggest a vintage Lyman. I have no experience with the new Malcolm. An 8X Targetspot should run about $400.

Looks close. I have a bunch of Unertl bases somewhere and will check. I'm pretty sure height would be the same for front & rear.

I've seen mixed reviews on the Malcolm but am hesitant about buyng an older scope on line. I do the "period correct" thing on my older rifles and every once in a while get a 50, 60 year old optic that has a smudge or glass separating from the tube. I'm hitting the Reno Gun show this weekend, probably a good place to check something out firsthand.

Thanks to all for the help.

I would look for a unertl 16 or 20 power scope with external adjustments and recoil spring. It would be period correct and most are in good shape from serious target shooters. By the way, contrary to popular belief, the recoil spring needs to be tighter, more pressure for low recoil guns like a .22lr.

This is my model 75, it has a R.A. Litschert 15X scope.

I just picked up this same scope at the Reno show, all complete including covers. A fellow had one for sale and I got it for $300.00, he had it tagged a bit higher. It needs a bit of cleaning outside and around the mounts but is otherwise in great shape, optics clean and clear. Next week at the range will be interesting.

I think you'll like it Doug, I've been real happy with mine, good clear scope.
The only problem I've had with the whole outfit, is the front sight inserts. My 75 was built in 39, and has the original 'mail box" front sight. I can't find the correct inserts, I bought some from a guy in Texas, but they're not correct. I want to keep the rifle original, so I don't really want to change sights.
    I'm still looking.

I have some information that may be useful in obtaining usable scope mounts. From an old Lyman chart it shows the front ring base needed to be a Lyman "B" (distance from top flat of base to top of barrel .225") the rear base is shown to be a Lyman "L" (distance from top of ring base to top of barrel .167"). Both bases are mounted on the barrel with the rear one flush against the receiver ring. These bases are the same as those used by Unertl and others. Unertl may or may not have copied the Lyman codes when he went into business. Lyman blocks (bases) will have the code stamped in the bottom. I am assuming your rifle is a target model. The very uncommon sporter weight barrel used different bases.

Well I'm hoping to show my high trch friends a thing or two. I haven't been able to locate bases yet, I was hoping theyd'd be the same height but have a gunsmith who can refit what I already have. Are there any "Winchester specific" majers or fabricators on line?
