Did Winchester ever put a metal butt plate on there model 62A ? This one by the serial number was made in 1946.

According to Ned Schwing's book on the Model 62/(62A), the metal butt plate was used on the 62 from the beginning of production in 1932 until 1935, and the composition butt plate with the Winchester Repeating Arms logo in the center was used from 1935 until the end of production. Taking Schwing's word as gospel, the metal butt plate was not used on the 62A since it did not appear until late 1939 or early 1940.
Does the subject Model 62A have any special features such as a front or rear sight? My point here is that Winchester would ordinarily do whatever the customer wanted, and if the gun has a special order item such as a non-standard sight, then the metal butt plate might be a special order item as well.0 -
Thank you very much for the information. No there are no special sights or features that I can tell or see. The gun is in excellent condition and was sold as in 97% condition and it came from a very reputable dealer that deals in collectable firearms, I guess it will just always be a mystery as to how it acquired a metal buttplate as I doubt there is anyway to check Winchester's special order records.
Again thank you for the information.0 -
We'd love to see photos of your new rifle.
